Coach Bill “Bubba” Bussey brings a competitive and loving heart to the Briarwood Tennis Program on and off the court.


Coach Bussey has played or been Captain of 10 USTA State Champion Adult Tennis Teams, with one team winning a Sectional Championship and representing USTA Southern at the National Tournament in Tucson, AZ. in 2012.  He and his doubles partner went a perfect 4-0 at the National Tournament.

He has won 9 USTA Tournament Titles, and has finished the season ranked #1 or #2, four times in Alabama for Adult Men’s Doubles or Mixed Doubles.


Coach Bussey is a USPTA Certified Teaching Professional since 2010 and has coached USTA Jr. Team Tennis several years.  He has served as a Volunteer Coach with the Briarwood Jr. High program from 2012-2014.  He now works with the Briarwood Varsity Program since 2015.

Off Court:

Coach Bussey has a long track record of promoting the sport of Tennis.  He received the Marc Kaplen Award for Media Excellence in 2008 from the USTA.  He also worked closely with the Alabama Sports Foundation, and the City of Birmingham to bring a Davis Cup Tie in 2009 and 2017: and a Fed Cup Tie to Birmingham in 2009.  The USTA Rick and Bubba Super Summer Slam held at the Pelham Racquet Club is the largest weekend USTA Tournament in the Southern Section and one of the largest in the country.  It regularly sees over 300 players each year.
